Sicily is a beautiful Italian island separated from the Italian mainland by the narrow Strait of Messina. It is also the largest island of the Mediterranean Sea with a lot to see and much to do.

The island is world-famous for the mafia which is stil influential, however, it would be unfair to associate the Bella Sicilia (beautiful Sicily), as the Italians call it only with its underground organization. Sicily has a rich history and culture which was greatly influenced by the culture of its numerous conquerors: Phoenicians, ancient Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Goths, Byzantines, Saracens and Normans who established the Kingdom of Sicily. However, after the extinction of the Norman dynasty Sicily was ruled by several powerful European dynasties (Hohenstaufen, Anjou, Angevin, Aragon, Bourbon) until it it unified with Italy by Giuseppe Garibaldi in 1860. Colorful and rich history of Sicily can be admired in numerous historical sites what makes the island perfect vacation destination for all history enthusiasts.

Besides many historical sides you can also visit Mount Etna, the tallest volcano in Europe and one of the most actives volcanos in the world, and numerous romantic coastal cities. Sicily is also an ideal place for all gourmets. The Sicilians put a lot of attention to preparation of food and drinks as well as to its service.
