Sveti Stefan is a splendid island on the Budva Riviera and the most exclusive resort in Montenegro. It used to be a tidal island first serving as a shelter from the Turkish raids. For that purpose Pastrovici, a Serb coastal clan in Montenegro allegedly erected a fort surrounded with defensive walls in 1442 and named the island after the Church of Saint Stephen (Sveti Stefan) which was built on the highest point of the island about the same time.

Island gained its present appearance in the 1950's when the authorities decided to resettle the remained 20 inhabitants and to transform it into an exclusive town-hotel. The architects completely renovated the settlement in its original appearance, while the interior of the houses was transformed into a luxurious apartments.

The popularity of Sveti Stefan among the world elites began to grow already in the 1960's and remained one of the most exclusive tourist destinations in the Adriatic Sea until today.
